Exploring Yamaha's New Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT): Three Key Insights

Yamaha is stepping up its game with the introduction of the Yamaha Automated Manual Transmission (Y-AMT), set to debut on models like the MT-07 and R7. This innovative system eliminates traditional clutch levers and gear shifters, opting instead for electronic actuators. Here’s what you need to know about the Y-AMT:

At Your Fingertips:
Similar to Honda’s DCT, Yamaha's Y-AMT features two electromechanical actuators—one for the clutch and one for shifting gears. Controls are conveniently located on the handlebars, allowing for seamless gear adjustments.

Transmission Modes:
The Y-AMT offers three distinct modes:

  1. Manual Mode: Enables manual gear shifting via buttons on the left-hand switch gear.
  2. 'D' Mode: Provides a relaxed, twist-and-go experience ideal for leisurely rides.
  3. 'D+' Mode: Tailored for spirited riding, this mode optimizes gear holding and quick downshifts, maintaining higher RPMs.

Future Applications:
While specific models haven't been disclosed yet, Yamaha hints at offering the Y-AMT across sports bikes, tourers, and commuter models. Potential candidates include the Tenere 700, expanding the system's reach beyond initial launches on the MT-07 and YZF-R7.
